THE THINGS YOU CARRY
As any of you who have been following my blog know, I’m all about prevention and early recognition of overuse issues. Obviously if we prevent the problem, we might not have to suffer. If we catch it early, we might not have to suffer…much. And even though through suffering…we grow stronger, I think it doesn’t apply as much to the physical being as to the emotional being . And it certainly doesn’t apply if the suffering is due to your purse. Now you might think you would suffer if you couldn’t own any bag your heart desired. But I’m here to tell you that these giant bags which resemble something…

FEATHER YOUR NEST
Get creative in the bedroom… Invest in some feather pillows and a good mattress. There are a lot of ways pillows can make your life better, and it’s not just in the bedroom. But since that’s where we use them the most, let’s start there. But we won’t stop there. I like to look at the situation in your bed much like I look at a pair of shoes. Does it look like your foot goes there? Take off your shoe and stand up next to it. Look down at your foot and shoe. Does it look like your foot fits in there? TENNIS ELBOW OR LATERAL EPICONDYLITIS
I had this for over a year! I remember reaching for something heavy and feeling a burning sensation across the outside of my elbow. I immediately knew that I had tennis elbow…or lateral epicondylitis. I usually see those patients sometime between one month and 6 months after the onset of pain. Usually sometime after they’ve continued to “work through” the pain. And if you’ve been reading my blog, you already know that doesn’t work. I immediately iced it and downed a couple of Aleves. I already had a wrist brace sitting around the house which I occasionally used when my carpal tunnel flared up. You probably wouldn’t have one of…

SHOULDER BURSITIS & IMPINGEMENT SYNDROME
I know you’ve seen me write about the numbers of patients I see each day with the various disorders about which I have written. If you add them up, they might come out to more than the number of patients I see each day. But remember that some patients come with several complaints! I just had to qualify that so I can now tell you that EVERY day in my clinic I see at least five patients with shoulder bursitis and its related disorders; rotator cuff impingement, tendonitis, rotator cuff tears and problems with the biceps tendon. First a little anatomy and physiology. We just got done talking about hip…

GET MORE SLEEP
Why do we yawn? It’s probably not because we’re bored. How often do you yawn because you’re bored? We take in more oxygen when we yawn. Maybe we need more oxygen. I believe yawning was a signal we developed before we used language. It might have been a way to show our teeth before fighting. Have you ever noticed that you sometimes yawn when you’re nervous? I always thought I yawned before a test because I was tired after staying up all night. I thought I yawned before surgery while I was in residency because I had been on call the night before, and yet I wasn’t actually tired.…
