Last week I had a couple of female patients tell me they felt a twinge in their knee when they sat down on their bent knee. Women do this all the time, and I honestly believe it’s built into our ancestral neuromuscular memory, because almost all of us do it, and it’s hard to stop unless you have a stiff knee or hip. You know what I’m talking about. You go to sit down on a couch, and like a giraffe, your leg comes up under you as you dump your weight down into that cushion. You’re getting in bed, and here comes that leg. Why do we do this?…

  • SIT LIKE A MAN (S.L.A.M.)

I’ve been promising to put this blog on my site for a long time. If you’ve read some of my responses to blog comments in the past several months, you would have read references to my Sit Like A Man (S.L.A.M.) program. Now S.L.A.M. is not a feminist movement. It’s not a how-to formula for board room strategies. Nor is it a rejection of “lady-like” behaviors. It’s not a drive to encourage women to wear pants and shorts in the work place. However, all of the above might certainly be the result of it.   It’s a women’s’ health movement. And I’m starting it! I’ve seen an occasional reference…

  • STAYING PAIN-FREE DURING COVID-19: KNEES

    April 1, 2020 / No Comments

Many of you are experiencing chronic and acute pain in your knees right now. Hopefully, not as many of you are out injuring yourselves. But if you are…go home. That is one way to prevent or decrease knee pain. Here are some others: Limit sports activities, such as soccer, football, basketball and volleyball right now. These are activities which can cause injury to the knee, or exacerbate old injuries and chronic conditions. This is especially important right now, not only because you shouldn’t be socializing, but also, if you injured yourself, you couldn’t have elective surgery, and the ER is not a good place to be. Surgery would be delayed,…

  • STIFFNESS: A COMMON SYMPTOM OF KNEE ARTHRITIS

    February 3, 2020 / 2 Comments

Stiffness is a common symptom of almost any bone or joint ailment, whether it be an injury or a chronic condition. Frankly, the aging human body would like nothing better than to curl up in the fetal position and stay there for a while, especially if injured or in pain. Think about it…who stretches out when they have a tummy ache, or when we hide, or if someone is attacking us? We curl up in a ball. It’s almost a reflex. When our bones, muscles and joints hurt, we tend to flex the muscles that surround the sore area. As time goes by, and we remain in that position, we…

  • A COMMON COMPLAINT – and how to fix it!

    October 13, 2019 / No Comments

Many of my patients complain of pain in their knees when they stand up from a sitting position. It’s a COMMON COMPLAINT! It’s often one of the earliest signs of arthritis, and it’s certainly a reminder that we’re getting old! When I was a young woman, I could go from lotus position to a sprint, with no balking from my knees. Now, just to get up to go to the bathroom, after sitting through a rerun of Walking Dead, is a stark reminder of my age. When you sit for a while, your knee might start to shift a little as you relax into that position and the different relationship…
