  • PART 6: STAYING PAIN-FREE DURING COVID-19 – CHILDREN

    April 27, 2020 / No Comments

Kids deserve their own post. Certainly, all my other recommendations apply, but there are a few additional considerations, when it comes to children’s orthopedic concerns. Try to avoid pain pills of all types (narcotic, NSAIDs, Tylenol, natural stuff). I did an entire post on this. Getting comfy with the use of pain pills might start early. If you have children, please read that post. Our brain has an amazing capacity to deal with pain. It functions very well in your children…unless they think it doesn’t. Parents often ask for pain pills on behalf of their children, even when they aren’t complaining of pain! …and R.I.C.E. By now, you know what…

  • PART 5: STAYING PAIN-FREE DURING COVID-19 – HANDS

    April 20, 2020 / No Comments

Our hands are definitely some of the most specialized parts of our bodies, and injury or disability in that area puts us at great disadvantage. So, I’ll start with my hand mantra: Don’t be so grabby. That’s right. When you spread your hand out wide to grab something heavy and large, you stress the delicate structures in your hand quite a bit, especially if you have a delicate little hand or it’s an older hand. Limit the grabbing of big books, big milk cartons, jar lids and other large heavy objects. Use the internet, get smaller milk cartons, use jar openers (or men) and lift lighter loads. And again, R.I.C.E.…

Believe it or not, April is National Foot Health Awareness Month, so what better time to cover keeping your feet pain-free than now? Frankly, every day should be foot health awareness day, because let’s face it…these dogs are always hurting us. They get injured. They’re deformed from the time we’re born. We wear the wrong shoes most of our lives, and they bear the weight of our entire body. Here’s how to help keep them pain-free and give them a little love while you’re at it. Rest: If your feet are hurting, get off them for a little while. Elevate your legs and feet, especially if they’re swollen. Massage your…

  • STAYING PAIN-FREE DURING COVID-19: INJURY PREVENTION

    April 6, 2020 / No Comments

I chose this subject next, rather than hips or feet, because as of this moment, the thing that might put you in the ER, is an injury. Even though I’m still seeing folks outside participating in sports and hazardous activities…they are willingly subjecting themselves to danger in every way. I’d rather focus on those of you who might injure yourselves accidentally. So, to get to the meat…ways to prevent injuries during Covid-19. Highlighted words are links to previous posts on www.drbarbarabergin.com. Watch where you’re going! Assess your environment for uneven surfaces and dangerous obstacles. Hold the handrails on stairs. Watch every stair until you reach the bottom. Turn lights on…

  • STAYING PAIN-FREE DURING COVID-19: KNEES

    April 1, 2020 / No Comments

Many of you are experiencing chronic and acute pain in your knees right now. Hopefully, not as many of you are out injuring yourselves. But if you are…go home. That is one way to prevent or decrease knee pain. Here are some others: Limit sports activities, such as soccer, football, basketball and volleyball right now. These are activities which can cause injury to the knee, or exacerbate old injuries and chronic conditions. This is especially important right now, not only because you shouldn’t be socializing, but also, if you injured yourself, you couldn’t have elective surgery, and the ER is not a good place to be. Surgery would be delayed,…

Some of you may be in a state of panic as you find it more difficult to see your physicians, especially with regard to your pain. Firstly, let me say that doctors are probably working on making telemedicine visits available to you. I’m set up for that, as are my partners. I would remind everyone to be as patient with us as we are going to be with you, while we work through this process. Trust me when I say that as with any medical software program, no one is trying to make it easy on us. I can’t help you with your hypertension or diabetes, but I can help…
