    April 12, 2014 / No Comments

I was asked to make a statement regarding my opinion on R.I.C.E. (rest, ice, compression and elevation) versus the updated and more technical acronym, P.O.L.I.C.E. (protection, optimal loading, ice, compression, elevation). My opinion is that R.I.C.E is essentially a first aid tool for any of us to use during the initial period after an injury, before you have a chance to go to the ER or to see your doctor. P.O.L.I.C.E. is what your doctor will consider after evaluating your condition. When I sprain my ankle, I’m heading straight home to rest it, put an ice pack on it, wrap it with an ace bandage and hike it up on…

See what I had to say in this brief article about a simple exercise you can do to prevent falls. And if you don’t fall, you’re much less likely to break bones! http://bit.ly/1pEBLnW Visit www.anationinmotion.org to read inspiring patient stories, learn about bone and joint health, and enter your orthopaedic success stories.

  • RESPECT THE INTERSECTION

    February 17, 2014 / No Comments

I’m seeing the evolution of a R.E.S.P.E.C.T. series. Again, another mundane aspect of our daily life. The lowly intersection. We pass semi-consciously through many every day and we pass through them safely. After all, they were developed for our safety. But it doesn’t always work that way. Sadly, the dead remind us of how fortunate we are to be alive, and then make us think of the things we can do to improve the potential for long life. Just last week two people were killed at an Austin intersection, reminding me of all the patients I have seen who have been injured under similar circumstances. Of historical interest is…

    September 5, 2013 / No Comments

When I see patients who are victims of accidents, I often find myself thinking about how I might have avoided that accident. So I have slip-proof tiles in my shower. I watch where I’m going. I don’t run around my house in stocking feet. I don’t drink and drive. There are just a lot of simple things you can do to prevent the vast majority of injuries. But sometimes crazy things happen and there’s just no way to prevent an injury. Sometimes people drive into oncoming traffic…just when you least expect it… But most automobile accidents are preventable. Obeying the three-second-rule is an easy way to prevent most of them.…

  • TEXTING AND DRIVING

    May 1, 2013 / No Comments

I think last month was Distracted Driving Awareness Month, better known as Texting and Driving Awareness Month. I submitted a blog entry to the Digital Parenting and Safety Blog regarding this issue, so I’m putting a link to it on my blog because I think it’s important. Texting and driving might statistically be getting  just about as deadly as drinking and driving. Many laws are getting passed in order to make this a crime, but I have yet to see much action on it. Unfortunately, in order for laws to work on most of us, someone has to go to jail. Hope it’s not anyone I care about. Let’s just say “NO” to…
