• RESPECT THE GROCERY STORE FLOOR

Fall precautions are dear to my heart because I see so many injuries due to falls. We need to stay off the ground. When we go to ground we often get hurt. You can read my blog on Fall Prevention to get some general ideas on ways to prevent falling down. https://drbarbarabergin.com/fall-prevention/ Suffice it to say, if we watch where we’re going we can prevent a lot of falls. But that’s not all there is to it. And there are some special situations, grocery store floors being one, which deserve honorable mention. We have to go to the grocery store. And I would have to say “Thank you!” to the…

  • RESPECT THE LUGGAGE CAROUSEL

This is a danger zone, kind of like the sidelines at an NFL football game. You have to keep your eyes open at all times. You have to position yourself so as not to get injured. As in a football game, most of the sideline spectators don’t get hurt. But every game will take its victims. If it’s really funny…like when it gets an unsuspecting photographer who is totally in the line of fire…you’ll see it played over and over again. But I’ve been there on the sidelines of high school and college games, and trust me, it’s a danger zone if you’re not wearing helmet and pads. The airport…

  • RESPECT THE PURSE

I’m sure I’m not going to get anywhere with this one. But look, I have to try. Purses are bad for your health. You never know which one of you is walking around with an upper quadrant liability such as cervical radiculopathy, myofascitis, bursitis, tennis elbow, deQuervain’s syndrome or the lowly carpal tunnel syndrome. But trust me, you’re out there…many of you having already helped me pay for my children’s education and my truck. And for that I say, “Thank you!” But there is hope. And if you’ve been reading my blog, you know that the hope comes in the form of modifying certain activities which will exacerbate or even…

  • RESPECT THE BRA

It’s been a while since I’ve blogged. Sorry to those of you who have been waiting.  So I’m jumping right back in with my RESPECT series. And just a reminder, the purpose of this series is to remind my followers and patients of the many destructive forces out there which can result in the slow or acute decline of our musculoskeletal system. Of course there are commonly seen, major forces, like doing squats (and I won’t labor over that subject, since I already have on two previous blogs), and gaining a lot of weight (I will blog on that subject someday when I have the energy to do so). Changing…

  • RESPECT THE INTERSECTION

I’m seeing the evolution of a R.E.S.P.E.C.T. series. Again, another mundane aspect of our daily life. The lowly intersection. We pass semi-consciously through many every day and we pass through them safely. After all, they were developed for our safety. But it doesn’t always work that way. Sadly, the dead remind us of how fortunate we are to be alive, and then make us think of the things we can do to improve the potential for long life. Just last week two people were killed at an Austin intersection, reminding me of all the patients I have seen who have been injured under similar circumstances. Of historical interest is…
